Black to Black
What is Black to Black? "Black to black" is a film editing technique where the screen fades to black at the end of one scene and then fades in from black into the next scene.
Some black-to-black techniques are:
Fade to Black – This is when a scene gradually darkens until the screen is completely black.
Fade In from Black – When a new scene slowly appears from a black screen.
Cut to Black – When the scene suddenly cuts to a black screen, often used for dramatic effect.
When scenes are combined, for example, ending one scene with a "fade to black" and starting the next with a "fade in from black", it creates a full black-to-black transition.
My First Black to Black
What stages did I go through? To create my first "Black to Black" video, my team and I positioned the camera steadily towards a bright light to activate the AE lock. After that, the person holding the camera needed to zoom out from a black object and then zoom back in, to a different black object while maintaining smooth camera movement.
To do "Black to Black" from one building to another, we had to ensure the camera followed a person towards a pole or another structure, then go into that building, making sure it faded to black. From that black frame, we transitioned into the second building, continuing to follow either the same person or a different one.
After videoing all the clips, we imported them into Adobe Premiere Pro and edited them together, ensuring they flowed seamlessly and matched the black to black transitions.
What would I improve on and why? To improve my video, I would do more movement as the camera person is doing the black to black, instead of just standing there. I would try to make the video more entertaining by walking to places, or simply doing movements that make me look excited. Moreover, I would do more flowy camerawork to capture the entire scene or place.
Why did I choose this song and layout? The song I chose was PlayBoi Carti's "Sky" song. I chose
this song to make the video more lively as I felt it was kinda of dull. I chose an upbeat, punk song to contrast with the actual video. I decided to put reverse, slowmo, grading and speed up some of the clips to make the video more animated and vibrant. I also decided to put lyrics along with the song, to match the song and make the clips more entertaining. I purposely placed the lyrics where they are to align with the song's beat and the clips.
