My Music Video Concept Film: Covered With Love
What was your concept? The concept in my music video involved a combination of black-to-black, object pov, tracking shots, and an igloo. I also incorporated flowers and hearts throughout the video to ensure the cute concept was evident.
Who or what were you influenced by? I was influenced by cute things that resemble love and heartbreak, such as pink flowers, hearts, and nature. Furthermore, I was inspired by the K-pop group Fifty Fifty and their song "Cupid". Their lyrics reflect someone who admires the idea of falling in love but struggles to do so, which inspired some of the scenes in my music video. For example, the shots where my team member is sitting on the grass, reading a book, eating, swinging or even walking.
How did you use your techniques creatively? I used my techniques creatively by using props like a clapperboard, perspex and the igool. For the clapperboard, I purposely used it at the start to show that my music video is beginning. A Perspex box was underneath my phone when I used the clapperboard to do an object pov. I used the iGool to create a neon light aesthetic that matched the theme of my music video. I chose a pink neon heart background to reflect the vibe of the song and used it to start off my music video. I also used "cut to the beat" to make the video more creative and included lyrics for more impact. To emphasise the beat drop in the song, I timed specific clips to align with that moment in the music.
How did you achieve your techniques? To achieve my first technique, which was a tracking shot, I focused the camera on my teammate's feet as she walked through the grass. I then cut to the beat, choosing clips that matched the cute concept I was aiming for. For the “black to black” transitions, I made sure the camera movement was swirly and dynamic to capture the entire atmosphere and show my teammate's actions, such as walking or eating.
What were the strengths and weaknesses of your experiments/films in terms of:
Strengths
One of my strengths was my camerawork during the “Black to Black” transitions. I was able to do swirly, flowy camera movement when moving on to the next "Black to Black". Editing was another strength—I was able to cut to the beat and align it well with the “Black to Black” techniques. I also edited lyrics into the video, which helped bring out the cute concept.
Furthermore, my concept itself was a strong point. Using flowers, nature, and hearts throughout the video helped show the cute concept I was aiming for. Editing the lyrics to match the flowers/nature in my music video also helped. For example, making the word “Cupid” pink to match the pink flowers, or making “Lonely” green to match the leaves. Lastly, using the iGool helped bring out the overall cute aesthetic.
Weakness
One weakness of mine that could have improved my video was planning the cut-to-the-beat clips. Some of the clips look too familiar, and filming them in a different location could have made them more different. Moreover, the lighting in some clips was too bright, making it hard to see the lyrics or scenery clearly—I would have colour graded the video to fix that. One of the lyrics, “Now I’m so lonely,” came a little bit too early, and in one of the final clips, my lip-syncing of the word “is” doesn’t match that part of the song. Lastly, I could have improved the ending by fading out both the video and the song.
For my album cover
One mistake I made in my album cover was mis-spelling the word "First" as "Frist" and using a strong, bold green colour. I liked that I used the colour green, but I could have made it a lighter green so you can see the words better.
How could you make this better next time in terms of film form, time management, and organisation?
I could have improved my music video by planning and organising it more thoroughly at the start. If I had spent more time preparing and knowing exactly what I wanted to film, the process would have been easier and smoother. For the most part, I was filming without a clear plan.
Moreover, I could have managed my time better by editing while I was still filming. Instead, I filmed during the first week and edited during the second, and we only had two weeks to complete everything. If I had better time management, I would have known precisely which clips I wanted to include and could have done a trial and error with the clips.
For my film format, I could have planned more on how I was going to incorporate the cute concept in my music video. I knew I wanted to put nature in it, but I didn't know until last time how I was going to use it in my video.
